Problems of Hong Kong Education System

After attending the last 2 lessons of Japanese culture, I have learnt that Japanese students can only enjoy 9 years education for free, which is less than

Survey Project Reflection*

In this project, our topic was "Travelling Habits of Japanese". Through this project, we would like to know more about the cultural values between Hong Kong people and native Japanese. Although the topic seemed to be very easy, I did find difficulties to gather data from various aspects.

For the Japanese culture, it appeared to be quite similar to Eastern values in general. But when it comes to a choice between travelling within Japan or overseas, more interviewees preferred travelling within Japan. It shows that the Japanese love their country very much, even when it comes to spending money within their country to boost up their economy.

For the research method, I have learnt to design a set of effective survey questions. This is not an easy job since there must be some blind spots when we were designing. If we could ask for more opinions from teachers and friends, this would not be a problem. Also, we had to ask native Japanese to help in this survey through friends and online platforms. While asking them, we also categorized their age group to obtain opinions from people with different values.

If I could make changes to this project in the future, I would modify the questions with wider choices and open questions to further investigate the values of Japanese. I would also add questions asking the interviewees' career and their salaries as they are big variables to other answers.

It is such a pity that the Japan earthquake happened within our research period. Before the tragedy, I could still get some responses from native Japanese. However, after the tragedy, I felt sorry for their experience and would not like to interrupt to ask them. I would suggest a longer period of time for this research so that we can have more time to gather a larger sampling group and the results we obtain would reflect more of the reality.

If it is possible, I hope to have some project activities which involve more participation in experiencing the Japanese cultures such as "origami", "chadou(茶道)" or wearing "yukata". These activities can show the conscientiousness of Japanese. I think these activities will be fun for students to enjoy while they are learning.

Thoughts towards the Survey Projects ①

Group 1 : Survey about Japanese Animation and Comics
                 (アンナ、静、ナッツ)

The presentation was very well-prepared and detailed in the analysis part. To get a further culture analysis, it's important to make some comparison between the foreign thoughts and our values. As an outsider, we can only receive messages of how good the Japanese anime and comics, maybe because those messages were only part of the whole picture. The Japanese people do have a neutral view on their Anime&Comics (AC) Culture, while we, Hong Kong people who are very interested in it, mostly possess a very positive thinking on this culture. I found it is quite interesting that the native Japanese people thought "Otaku" is no good to future of children, since Hong Kong AC lovers won't think it's a problem at all.

Group 2 : Perception of the Japanese people towards Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinance Regarding the Healthy Development of Youths
                 (Isolde, Nicole, Peggy, Sing)

The issue about the ordinance has been controversial among many countries and regions because people are concerned about the healthy MENTAL development of youths. The survey's aim is a rather serious topic. I really appreciate the preparation they have done on the topic research and the power point slides. I'm also very interested in how the Japanese youths think about this issue which is aiming at them and may affect their entertainment on AC aspect. It's a pity that the interviewees were not in their target group, while most of them do not really know about the ordinance issue. The result from the sampling group may not be truly reflecting how the native Japanese views on such a sudden change. I feel that appropriate constriction on these indecent materials should be adapted but at the same time, parents guidance is much more important to help youths develop a mentally healthy life.

Group 3 : How do Japanese feel about Hong Kong?
                 (ゆず、ゆき、エミー)

This is really an interesting topic because we can know how the foreign people think about Hong Kong. The presentation skills of this group was really fascinating. Many Hong Kong people may think it's strange that the Japanese people will think of Jackie Chan when they mention Hong Kong. However, I don't feel the same way. Since I knew about this point when I watched a Japanese cartoon featuring a character who looked like the real Jackie Chan and was good at martial arts. The character was even named as "Jackie". Therefore, we can see how influential is Jackie Chan to the foreign countries. :D

わたし=ぼく=あたし=?(Personal Pronoun Project)

There are many interesting personal pronouns in Japanese language.
They all have different meanings, representing various speakers' characters.

Comic: ちびまる子ちゃん(Chibi Maruko-chan)
Gender: Female
Age: 8
Character: ordinary primary school girl, always avoids homework & housework and takes advantages of her doting grandfather

Atashi is the adapted version of watashi, of which the "w" sound is omitted. Atashi is generally used by female, especially girls. It makes the girls sound cuter. "Atashya" was originally "あたし は",  normally young children will make it brief.

おりゃあ、ぼかぁ、わたしゃ、わしゃあ、おらぁ are also from the same case.

⑤わっち

Name: 月詠(Tsukuyo
Comic: 銀魂(Gintama)
Gender: Female
Age: Unknown, probably in her twenties
Character: Independent, already gave up her identity of woman, protective to people whom she loves, head of Ninja Protect team of 吉原桃源郷 (Yoshihara Underground Street)

Wacchi is also an adapted version of watashi. However, it is not common among the usage of women  language for it is supposed to be the language of women (prostitutes) in Edo Period. Let's see a comment on Tsukuyo from other female characters in Gintama.

From right to left:
"According to Toujyou's investigation, She [Tsukuyo] uses 郭詞(くるわことば)"Wacchi" as personal pronoun."
"Wacchi!? Wait! What kind of girl is she [Tsukuyo]? Miss Otae, what kind of girl is she[Tsukuyo]? This girl[Tsukuyo]!!"
"Huh? She really strikes hard to act her character. She doesn't have to say this language grudgingly~~"

They don't like the personal pronoun "wacchi" as it means that the speaker is a prostitute. However, Tsukuyo is not a prostitute, she is just living in that street full of prostitutes and protects the women there from the violent act of the male customers. Therefore, use of personal pronoun can also represent the origin of the speakers.

⑥あっし

Name: 外道丸(Gaidoumaru

Comic: 銀魂(Gintama)
Gender: Female
Age: Unknown
Character: 式神(shikigami), protective to her master, merciless to other creatures

**"Asshi" is one of the adapted version of "Atashi", which is normally used by 職人 (people who have their specialities used in their work).

⑦わし

Name: 華陀(Kada
Comic: 銀魂(Gintama)
Gender: Female
Age: Unknown
Character: Glamorous appearance, devilish soul

⑧我/吾(われ)

Name: 椿 平子(Chin pirako
Comic: 銀魂(Gintama)
Gender: Female
Age: Teenage girl
Character: 人斬り(killer), obeys her master.

⑨余/予(ヨ)

Name: 紫 劉輝(Shi Ryuuki
Comic: 彩雲国物語(Saiunkoku Monogatari)
Gender: Male
Age: Around 20
Character: determined to be a good king, loves Shuurei very much

** "Yo" is the singular pronoun used by the 藩主(Hanshuu) and 君主(Kunshuu).

わたくし(Watakushi) should be the most polite form of personal pronoun, followed by わたし(Watashi).

They can be used by both male and female. For most of the time, if not in a serious situation, male will use ぼく(Boku) or おれ(Ore) ; female will use わたし(Watashi) or あたし(Atashi). Young boy and young men would like to use ぼく(Boku) while mature and strong men would use おれ(Ore).

わっち(Wacchi) , あっし(Asshi) , われ(Ware) , わし(Washi) , 余(Yo) would rarely be used in modern Japan because these are rather old languages. The elderly or people in rural area may still use it.

I'll prefer あたし because it is more casual and sounds cuter than わたし. However, if it's a very serious occasions like interviews, I'll prefer わたくし.

There are still a lot of different Japanese personal pronouns which are not found.

Japanese Geography Project

Although I haven't been to Japan yet, I have already got a few ideas of where to go.

Akihabara秋葉原

Akihabara is located at Chuo-dori Street which is to the west of Akihabara Station in Tokyo.

Akihabara seems to be labelled as the place for "otaku" since there are many shops selling anime products and IT products. The products sold in the shops are not likely to attract girls, but I'm strongly interested in both of them. Japanese anime is my favourite and I'm sure I'll go crazy if I see those products!!! Also, IT products have a lot of amazing functions, especially in Japan, the technology are very advanced compared to other developed regions.

Maybe I'll go to Otome Road (a street in Ikebukuro) as well to find lovely anime products skewed towards women!

I love the nature and flowers a lot. Therefore, it'd be great if I can see some special sceneries in Japan.

Lavender - Furano富良野 in Hokkaidou北海道
Lavender & Poppies at Furano - Furano, Hokkaido(http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Japan/photo1050983.htm)
Lavender and Poppies in Furano

Hokkaidou is the largest, northernmost island of Japan. Lavenders in country side brings peace to people, especially busy Hong Kong people. The purple colour of lavenders makes the scene romantic too.

Sakura - Aomori青森 in Tohoku東北

I have been wishing to see sakura for a long time. I will choose the sakura in Tohoku because the view will be fabulous with Japanese historical architectures. For example, Hirosaki Castle makes the sakura look more elegant. Sakura flowers in early spring.

Tohoku is the at the northeast region of Japan. It has beautiful scenes in autumn with autumn leaves.

In the Towada Hachimantai National Park of Aomori, We can find Autumn Leaves with different colours coming together to form a chromatic picture. Oirase Stream奥入瀬渓流, Lake Towada十和田湖 are some of the famous tourist spots inside the park. There are also lots of hot springs. It'd be a marvelous experience to try hot springs in such a colourful "leafy world".

There are still many spots I'd like to visit in Japan like festivals, Kabukicho歌舞伎町...

日本へ行ったことありませんが、きっと頑張って、友達と一緒に行きます。

Japanese Writing Projects #1

With regard to the the first culture lecture, there are several types of uses of katakana片仮名:
1. Onomatopoeia
2. Loan words
3. Emphasized words
4. Scientific naming
5. Romanji
6. Kaomoji

Here are some examples of Japanese words found in our daily life.

1. Onomatopoeia
The sound the cats make = ニャ、ニャーァ、ニャン
The sound of knocking at the door = コツコツ

These kind of katakana words are used for simulating sounds from mother nature, animals and how objects hit for sound. There may not be any meaning when the Japanese characters are combined together.

2. Loan words
Fruit: フルーツ (in English)
Appointment: アポイントメント、アポイント、アポ(in English)
Bread: パン(in Portuguese ポルトガル)

Sometimes, we can see some katakana transcribing foreign words. Since there were not enough words in the Japanese word bank, the Japanese people tried to use these foreign words to do some expansion.

3. Emphasized words
"ゴミ" in ゴミ箱

4. Scientific naming
ゴリラ is the scientific name of gorilla.

5. Romanji

Yamaha is an international Japanese brand for musical instrument. Writing やまは in romanji is to make it common in other foreign countries and easier for foreigners to pronounce without learning Japanese characters.

6. Kaomoji
Kaomoji is the mixture of symbols, Japanese characters and kanji. People use kaomoji as a way to express their feelings in a graphical means.

eg. 。゚+.ヾ(・∀・)゚+.゚イイ!!
This kaomoji is expressing happiness. There is an inverted "A", + symbol, rotated "ッ", etc.

ボス☆やっぱりカタカナではダメみたいです~!

I saw this title when I was browsing some Japanese blogs. We can see ダメ is written in katakana, which makes me ponder why katakana is used but not hiragana or kanji.

"dame" can be written in hiragana だめ,  in kanji 駄目 and of course, in katakana ダメ. I guess, with different use of words, different meaning will be conveyed to the readers. If we write a sentence "私はだめです。" , the meaning of "dame" is very mild because they are in between hiragana characters. However, when we read these words, "はだめです" seems to be connected and it takes a bit time to distinguish だめ out from the word phrase. If kanji was used, the meaning may seem to be "totally not good at something" or "(machines) are not working".

Therefore, katakana can also be used to emphasis the existence of the word "dame" from the word phrase without a serious meaning. This use is to catch the readers' eyes with katakana.

Another example of use of katakana:

アニメ銀魂のED「ウォーアイニー」:

This is the 14th opening song of anime "Gintama"
We can see that the lyrics, except kanji, are all katakana.

今日、心許無
乙女心ユラユラ
月夜
被害妄想、グラグラ

The katakana characters in blue are of emphasizing purpose. The words can express a "lovely" feeling as the female characters do in the video.

The katakana characters in purple are the Onomatopoeia, describing the conditions.
ユラユラ is describing the status of quivering.
グラグラ is describing the status of wobbling, tottering, shaking.

色彩アイスクリイム
アイスクリイム is the loan word of "Ice Cream" in English.

Also, "ウォーアイニー" is the pronunciation of "I love you" (我愛你) in Putonghua.  Here, the transcribing use of katakana appears again.

食事

This is a menu from a Japanese restaurant Ajisen Ramen(味千ラーメン)in Hong Kong. We can find some Japanese characters inside, I think this is to serve the Japanese customers who are living in or visiting Hong Kong.

広告

This is an advertisement of watches, the brand of which is eSwatch. It is not a Japanese brand but in this advertisement, there are Japanese sentences, writing "大切な人と、毎日もバレンタインディにしょう。あなたは、運命の人。このおもいは、一生輝きつづける。だから、忘れない。時間が流れていても、この瞬間を捕まえる。それは、永遠の愛の証明。" I guess this is the message to show the target customers that the watches aim at promoting the Japanese style and design. I think the Japanese sentences can also attract those who can understand Japanese language and impress them about the products.
